How do you fix a GE dishwasher not draining? There’s nothing quite like the frustration of opening up your dishwasher, only to discover water and dirty dishes left behind. Your GE Dishwasher not draining can be a frustrating problem, but there can be an easy fix. Follow this guide to figure out “Why is there standing water in my GE dishwasher?”

Check for Blockage in Filter, Hose, and Air Gap

  • Check the Filter: How to Clean GE Fine & Ultra Fine Filters
    1. Remove the bottom rack
    2. Remove the Ultra Fine Filter by twisting it counterclockwise, then lifting it to remove it.
    3. Rinse the filter gently and use a sponge or soft material to remove any built-up particles or calcium deposits.
    4. Once clean, replace the filter into place and twist it clockwise until it locks into place. The embossed arrows on the Ultra Fine and Fine filter should help align it into place.

  • Check for Blockage in Hose
Ensure that there is not any paper or built-up material or food particles that could be blocking the sump area in the rear of the dishwashing tub. Locate the drain hose below your sink and ensure there is not a blockage or kink within the hose. Most dishwashers drain into the kitchen sink, so also ensure that your kitchen sink and garbage disposer is not clogged.
  • Check the Air Gap: How to Clean Your Air Gap
Not all plumbing codes require an air gap to be installed, so you may not have one. If you do have an air gap, it protects dirty water from a clogged drain from running back into the dishwasher. To check your air gap, remove the cap that covers the air gap and remove any particles that may be clogging it. Double-check the hose attached to the air gap to make sure it is free from debris, as well. Replace the cap on the air gap.

Ensure You’re Using the Right Type & Amount of Detergent

For the best wash, your dishwasher needs the right type of detergent. Having hard or soft water can affect the type and amount of detergent you should use, as well. When the dishwasher water won’t drain correctly, you may be using a detergent or soap that creates too many suds. To find the correct type of detergent and rinse agents for your dishwasher, consult the user manual for your GE dishwasher.

Check for Installation Issues

Many issues can occur if your GE dishwasher is not installed correctly. If your GE dishwasher not draining continues to be a problem, you will need to check for installation issues. Some of these issues include: air-gaps not being properly installed within the drain hose; the drain hose has a drain loop that is attached incorrectly to your GE dishwasher; or an issue with your garbage disposal that is connected to your GE dishwashing machine.
